BharatNotes What Are the New NCERT Books?
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023, NCERT began rolling out completely redesigned school textbooks from 2024–25, one class at a time. These are not the lightly "rationalised" 2022 editions — they are new books with new names, new frameworks, and an integrated, inquiry-driven structure. Two series matter most for UPSC foundations:
- Curiosity — the new Science textbook for the middle stage (Classes VI-VIII). Built around investigation rather than rote facts, with hands-on activities and explicit links to India's science, energy, space, health and environment agenda.
- Exploration — the new Science textbook for the secondary stage, beginning with Class IX (2026-27). It integrates physics, chemistry, biology and earth science into 13 connected chapters and marks a step up in rigour from Curiosity.
- Exploring Society: India and Beyond — the new integrated Social Science textbook. It merges History, Geography, Civics and Economics into theme-based chapters grouped under five strands: India and the World (Land and the People) · Tapestry of the Past · Governance and Democracy · Economic Life Around Us · Our Cultural Heritage.
Notes status: Classes VI, VII, VIII and Class IX Science (Exploration, all 13 chapters) are complete on BharatNotes. Class IX Social Science is awaited from NCERT (see below). Why the New NCERT Matters for UPSC
NCERT books are the bedrock of UPSC preparation, and the new editions change the game in three ways:

Class IX New NCERT (2026–27) — Newly Launched
The secondary stage begins with Class IX. The new Science textbook, Exploration, replaces the old single "Science" book (integrating physics, chemistry, biology and earth science), and the new integrated Social Science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond, merges the four old books (History, Geography, Political Science, Economics) into one. (Under the same NCF-SE 2023 rollout, Classes IX and XI transition in 2026-27; Classes X and XII follow in 2027-28.)
